How to Become a Doctor in Michigan

To become a doctor in Michigan, you will need to get licensed. But before that, you will have to fulfill certain prerequisites. These are as follows:

  1. Education
  2. Complete a 4-year long bachelor’s degree from an accredited program. This does not have to be in a medical field, though it is recommended that you take courses in biology and related sciences. Once you have completed this, you will need to enroll in a medical school, which is also a four-year long degree. This degree would focus on various fundamentals of medicine in the first two years, while the last two years would focus on clinical practice in a supervised setting.

  1. Residency
  2. Once you have completed the educational requirements, you can move on to a residency, which typically lasts around 3 to 7 years. The amount of time a residency takes would depend on the specialty you have chosen.
Licensing: This will be the final step in your path to becoming a doctor in Michigan. To qualify for licensure, you need to provide the following:
Criminal Background Check: You will receive this form once your online application is complete.
Good Moral Character Questions: You will have to provide detailed answers to questions about character in this form.

  1. Human Trafficking
  2. This would become applicable beginning December 6, 2021; applicants will be required to complete training to identify victims of human trafficking.

  1. Social Security Number
  2. In case you do not have one, you will have to provide the SSN Affidavit form.

  1. Certificate of Medical Education Form
  2. This must be submitted directly to the Board by the medical school.

  1. Names of Any Hospital Affiliations
  2. Provide the names of each hospital you have been employed at, along with a list of hospitals you are allowed to practice at.

  1. USMLE Exam Scores
  2. Verified documents must be sent to the Board on all components of the USMLE. These reports need to be sent by the Federation of State Medical Boards or the National Board of Medical Examiners.

  1. Certification of Completion of 2 Years of Postgraduate Clinical training
  2. This needs to be submitted by the Director of Medical Education from the institute where you completed your postgraduate training.
